I am of the opinion that in order for you to develop great abs you will have to perform a certain amount of direct abs work at the gym. Dieting is important – and yes, when you train the other muscle groups the abs will often get a “bonus effect” out of this – but, nevertheless, if you are aiming for really strong and well-sculpted abs you must learn to love the pain that an intense abs workout session brings.
